Galle

Galle Port is a natural harbor located in the city of Galle on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. Currently, Galle Port is one of the most active regional port in the country.
It is also the only Sri Lankan port that provides yachting facilities for recreational activities. Galle has been a major port of the country since ancient times and played an important role in international trade in the ancient world.
History...
Until the 14th century, the port of Galle was one of the most important seaports of the “Silk-road”. After the Portuguese built the Galle Fort in 1588 AD, the port of Galle has been a major destination in the Indian Ocean for over 200 years, serving as a logistics port between Europe and Asia for cargo ships and warships.
International maritime traffic moved from Galle to Colombo in the late 19th century, when the British built the Colombo Port Breakwater in 1873 AD
The Galle Harbor is a popular destination among local and foreign marine archaeologists who research ancient shipping. Marine archaeologists of the Central Cultural Fund (CCF) and Maritime Archeology Unit (MAU) established in Galle have carried out a number of archaeological excavations in the Galle Harbor.
